A DFL gun violence prevention package faces one last committee hurdle Wednesday in the Minnesota Senate. The bill encourages school districts to have anonymous threat reporting systems. It bans ghost guns, or guns without a serial number. It funds mental health grants and school safety initiatives. And it restricts the sale of semi-automatic weapons. Those guns wouldn't be banned, but owners have to certify ownership with the state.
Gov. Tim Walz delivered his final State of the State speech Tuesday. The two-term Democrat had plenty of support from members of his party as he listed off the changes his administration has ushered through — bolstering pre-K, making college free for families who make less than $80,000 and setting the state up to be 100 percent clean energy by 2040. But Republicans see his legacy, and the work of his administration differently.
A new health inequities analysis released Wednesday shows widespread racial and ethnic disparities persist in Minnesota. The 2026 State Health Disparities Report released by the Commonwealth Fund, analyzed 24 indicators to measure health care access, quality of care and health outcomes for five racial and ethnic groups from 2022 to 2024.
St. Paul elected officials were at the state Capitol Tuesday asking for an extension to a sales tax to fund renovations at the Grand Casino Arena complex. The city has a deal with the Minnesota Wild to split the cost of a $600 million renovation to the site. That includes improvements to the arena, the St. Paul RiverCentre and the Roy Wilkins Auditorium. To help pay for that, St. Paul wants to extend its existing half-cent sales tax, which helps fund the arena. It's set to expire in 2042 city officials want to push that to 2061. The city will need legislative approval for the extension.
