Key endorsements made in weekend conventions for Minnesota’s major political parties

University of Minnesota researchers plan to study whether clay is effective at removing potentially toxic algal blooms from stormwater ponds in Minneapolis.

The City of Moorhead received the funds needed to complete local flood mitigation upgrades. Moorhead will receive $20 million from the state legislature and a regional flood diversion authority to upgrade sewer pump stations that could divert water away from the city during floods. City officials say the sewer pump station upgrades could be completed by the end of next year.

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan has the DFL endorsement for U.S. Senate heading into a primary election. Flanagan had no opposition in Rochester. That's because U.S. Rep. Angie Craig pulled out of the endorsing contest days before the convention began.

The primary election is Aug. 11. Republicans endorsed former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze for Senate, but he too is facing a primary challenge from well-known sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya.

And for state auditor, accountant Zack Filipovich is the Minnesota DFL party’s choice. He manages finance for a nonprofit in Duluth and formerly served on that city's council. He's likely to face Republican Nate George in November. George was endorsed by his party on Friday.

Hennepin County recently resumed its annual testing at public beaches to ensure water is safe for swimming. County environmental health staff will test 31 local swimming beaches weekly to monitor for the microorganism E. coli.
