Fridley schools begin classes after being one of the most affected districts during ICE surge last year

Students in the Fridley school district are returning to classes Wednesday morning. The Fridley school district was among those most affected in the Twin Cities by Operation Metro Surge. Now, at the start of the new school year, district superintendent Brenda Lewis says enrollment has not fallen, even though school leaders expected it to.

The first imports of discounted, foreign beef are expected to enter the U.S. this month. President Donald Trump announced the imports last week, requiring this new beef to be sold at 25 percent below the market price.

A judge in Minneapolis Tuesday handed lengthy prison sentences to the two men convicted in a mass shooting last year. Hennepin County Judge Juan Hoyos sentenced Arlonzo Williams Jr. to nearly 73 years for the October murder of 21-year-old DaMarco Fletcher Jr. Williams on the dance floor of Bar Zia in downtown Minneapolis. Three other people were wounded.

Members of Minnesota's Nepali community and supporters gathered outside the state Capitol Tuesday to honor the victims of flash floods and landslides in Nepal and Tibet. The disaster began last week when a glacier collapsed, sending a torrent of water and debris downstream. More than 1,000 people have been killed and 4,000 are missing.

With the Minnesota State Fair in full swing, family and friends are remembering Jerry Untiedt, the farmer who grew all of the sweet corn for the corn roast. He passed away earlier this summer. Untiedt was 77. He died of heart complications.
