Minneapolis City Council to hear public comment on mayor's proposed budget

Minneapolis City Council members will take public input Monday on Mayor Jacob Frey’s proposed $2.6 billion budget for 2027. Frey is proposing cuts to about 100 positions and an 11 percent property tax hike to cover a $30 million shortfall. City staff have presented details on those cuts to council for the past two months.

Xcel Energy is proposing to freeze its electricity rates for two years until 2028. In exchange, Xcel wants permission from state regulators to use federal tax credits from planned battery storage projects sooner than expected. The plan comes as state regulators investigate the affordability of electric and natural gas service, while many Minnesotans struggle to pay their utility bills.

The St. Paul City Council will propose a plan for how they think the city and its partners ought to respond to the needs at a large encampment. Council president Rebecca Noecker says the mayor's office is clear they want to shut it down before the year ends, but hasn't provided a timeline. The resolution proposes establishing a navigation tent next to the encampment for at least two months before any future closure.

Some of those are directly blaming the Somali community. Somali leaders have criticized that, and said that causes fear in the community.

The number of homes on the market hit a seven-year-high, according to new data from Minnesota Realtors. However, with more than 21,000 homes on the market, the trade group says supply is still below what it would be in a balanced market.
