DFL Sen. Amy Klobuchar will be Minnesota's first female governor

Here’s a quick look at news across the state this Wednesday morning.

DFL Sen. Amy Klobuchar will be Minnesota’s next governor

Klobuchar defeated Republican Lisa Demuth in Tuesday’s election. She will be the first female governor in Minnesota history. She promised supporters at her victory party in St. Paul that she would be a transformative governor.

Klobuchar noted Tuesday was the birthday of Harper Moyski, one of the children killed in the shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis last year. Klobuchar pledged to sign a gun safety law in her name.

Democrat Peggy Flanagan is the first Native American woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate

Flanagan defeated Republican Michele Tafoya with about 54 percent of the vote. She told a crowd of cheering supporters early this morning that her election was part of a message sent by voters across the entire country.

Flanagan pledged to work to lower costs, rip ICE apart, end the war in Iran and support Medicare for all. Flanagan will replace retiring Sen. Tina Smith.

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar has won a 5th term in congress

Omar’s win comes amid a federal criminal investigation. Omar, a progressive Democrat, was heavily favored to win her Minneapolis district.

Just weeks before the election, federal agents with the Department of Homeland Security searched Omar’s home, which they said was part of a criminal investigation. Some officials said the federal government is looking into her immigration record — amid unproven rumors that she entered into a fraudulent marriage, and that her father lied about her age on citizenship applications.

Omar has denied any wrongdoing, and called the investigation an intimidation tactic by President Donald Trump.

Democrat Matt Little won Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District

The outcome of the 1st Congressional District race remained uncertain early Wednesday. Incumbent Republican Rep. Brad Finstad and Democratic challenger Jake Johnson each held about 50 percent of the vote, with Johnson clinging to a slim edge in the unofficial returns. A recount is possible.
