Immigration activists call for release of investigation into Rose Avenue clash

Here’s a quick look at news across the state Friday morning.

Data centers were a factor that voters considered this election

Anger over large-scale data centers was a factor in major elections across the country this week. It also played a role in some local Minnesota races.

Last week city councilors in Hermantown approved a controversial Google data center in a rural residential area just outside Duluth. This week, voters elected two outspoken critics of the project to the council. Another Google data center is planned for Pine Island outside Rochester. Voters there elected a new mayor who criticized the lack of transparency around the project.

Immigration activists call for release of investigation of Rose Avenue clash

Immigration activists are calling for the release of an investigation of a clash between protesters and St. Paul police almost a full year ago. A federal law enforcement operation drew protests in the city that morning, where video from the scene showed police using chemical irritants, sponge bullets and pepper balls to control a crowd of protesters.

St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her says she understands the frustration and is committed to reviewing the results of the investigation.

Red Lake woman convicted of murder and arson to be sentenced Friday

A Red Lake woman convicted of killing two of her children and setting fire to their home is expected to receive life in prison when she’s sentenced on Friday.

In early 2024, Jennifer Marie Stately fatally stabbed her 6-year-old son Remi and attacked 5-year-old Tristan with a knife before setting their house on fire and fleeing with her youngest son — then a toddler.

In February, a jury in Fergus Falls took less than a hour to convict the 37-year-old on federal charges of murder and arson. She faces a mandatory life sentence.

Retiring Gov. Tim Walz will leave it up to Klobuchar to appointee a temporary senator

Sen. Amy Klobuchar won Tuesday’s election for Minnesota governor and will take office in January. She’ll have to resign from the Senate before then. Current Gov. Tim Walz told MPR News that he and Klobuchar will work together on timing, but he will defer to her on who to pick to fill the Senate seat. Both are Democrats.

Detroit Lakes school board looks mostly the same after the election

LGBTQ+ activists in Detroit Lakes were hoping to shake up the school board. Since July, a majority of the board has been trying to remove rainbow stickers from school grounds.

But after the election, the board’s political makeup is largely the same. Two incumbents on opposite sides of the issue won reelection. And newcomer Katie Large supports removing the stickers just like her predecessor.
