Fewer medical students choose primary care careers

Primary care medicine is in trouble. That's the conclusion of a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine. The doctor who authored that article says the great majority of patients still go first to a primary care physician rather than a specialist. Despite that, the American College of Physicians warns that primary care "is in grave risk of collapse."

MPR's Tom Crann spoke with Dr. Jon Hallberg about why fewer medical students are opting for a career in primary care medicine, and whether the field can survive.
