(AP) Two people died Sunday after the car they were in sped off the lift bridge here after it had been opened to let boats pass underneath, authorities said. The bridge was in the up position when the car went over the edge, falling about 15 feet into the St. Croix River, Mayor Jay Kimble said. He said the car apparently went around other cars and a barricade.

Rescuers recovered the two bodies and a third person who had been in the car was rescued by a boater, authorities said.

The car, which went off the bridge around 4 p.m., was traveling west from the Wisconsin side of the bridge.
