(AP) An Iron Range man brandished a handgun before he was shot and killed by a Minnesota state trooper, authorities said Wednesday. Investigators at a news conference said the trooper knew Ronald Hannuksela, 50, of Mountain Iron had several outstanding felony warrants. Authorities said the trooper, Bryan Carey, 35, pulled the suspect over in downtown Eveleth Tuesday afternoon, approached the car and yelled several times for Hannuksela to step out.
When Hannuksela displayed the handgun, the trooper fired multiple times, fatally wounding him. The incident was captured on the trooper's squad car video camera.
A .32-caliber revolver was later found on the front passenger seat of Hannuksela's vehicle.
Hannuksela was wanted on two warrants for first-degree controlled substance violations and one warrant for felony possession of a firearm.
Several agencies, including the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, were investigating.
Carey was put on paid administrative leave. He is a two-year veteran of the State Patrol's Virginia district and has received 10 letters of commendation, the State Patrol said.
