Officer shot in Amboy stand-off upgraded to fair condition

(AP) A Mankato police officer hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head has been upgraded to fair from serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday.
Robert Sadusky, one of two officers shot on Saturday during a 7½-hour standoff with a man at a home near Amboy, was brought to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester in critical condition with a severe head wound.
The 37-year-old was upgraded to serious condition after surgery on Sunday, and then upgraded again on Monday, Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Amy Reyes said.
Authorities say Sadusky and St. Peter police officer Chris Nelson, 44, were shot in the head by 41-year-old Jeff Skjervold on Saturday night after responding to a call about a domestic disturbance at Skjervold's home just west of Amboy, about 20 miles south of Mankato.

Nelson is recovering at home with his family Sunday, authorities said. Both officers are with the River Valley Tactical Response Team.
Skjervold got into a fight Saturday with a woman, who left the home before officers entered the house. He apparently shot himself to death after barricading himself in his home, authorities said.
Vernon Center resident Bruce Kietzer said he used to work with Skjervold at an area hog farm couple a years ago. He remembers Skjervold talking about problems with his partner when they worked together.
"That can be rough on a person," Kietzer said. "That can lead you to do something you wouldn't normally do."
