Travel and Leisure magazine has recognized the new Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis with an international design award.

A panel of seven judges named the Guthrie the Best Cultural Space in the magazine's third annual design competition.

The judges commended architect Jean Nouvel for what they described as his "highly dramatic-gravity-defying" gestures, that also "echo the down-to-earth grandeur of industrial shapes and masses" nearby.

The Guthrie opened its new space in June 2006 on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.
