SPCO's newest partner makes his debut
French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard has a busy international career that includes curating a "Perspectives" series at Carnegie Hall and serving as pianist-in-residence with the Berlin Philharmonic. Now he's beginning a three-year term as artistic partner with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
This week Aimard debuts in his new role as one of a half-dozen soloists and conductors who collaborate in the orchestra's artistic planning and appear regularly as performers. The pianist says he wants to rediscover the classics and discover new things in his programs with the SPCO. His first concerts feature music by Haydn and Mozart, along with more recent work by Olivier Messiaen and Elliott Carter.
In a conversation with Minnesota Public Radio host John Birge, Aimard talks about his busy musical life, new partnership with the SPCO and acoustical piano "sound mirrors."
