Morality in the doctor's office

A study in the Feb. 8 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine shows how doctors let their moral values affect the way they treat their patients.

According to the study, 86 percent of doctors surveyed believe physicians are obligated to present all medical options to their patients -- even if the doctor is morally opposed to the option.

But the idea that the other 14 percent of physicians may be willing to withhold treatment options has raised some eyebrows -- perhaps most notably on the New York Times Editorial page.

It's no surprise to All Things Considered regular medical analyst, Dr. Jon Hallberg. He told host Tom Crann just what the survey asked his colleagues.
