Fellow Republican Steve Drazkowski of Wabasha says he'll seek the District 28-B seat being vacated by Sviggum, who has been named as the new Commissioner of the Department of Labor and Industry.
Sviggum says he expects the special election to be held July 31st.
Drazkowski ran for the state legislature last fall but lost in the Senate District 28 race to long-time incumbent Steve Murphy, DFL-Red Wing.
Sviggum said the loss of his leadership role in the House last fall played into his decision to accept an appointment the labor and industry appointment. Sviggum lost his Speaker role when Democrats took over the majority in the House following last fall's election.
