It is the last week of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Around the globe, devout Muslims spend more time in prayer and reflection and they fast during daylight hours.

The U.S. House unanimously passed a resolution this week recognizing the month of Ramadan and the important role that Muslim-Americans play in the nation's culture. However, 43 of the representatives who were present refused to vote for or against the measure.

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, DFL-Minn., is the first Muslim in Congress and the first to observe these religious rituals as member of Congress. He joined All Things Considered host Tom Crann on the phone to discuss Ramadan and the House vote.
