A spokesman for Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport says things are going smoothly and travelers are experiencing few problems on this busy travel day. A record 38.7 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more for the Thanksgiving holiday. Most will drive, but 4.7 million people across the country are expected to fly.
Airport spokesman Pat Hogan said people should still arrive early at the Twin Cities airport, but they should not expect any big delays.
"You know a few years ago this time of year the ticketing lobby would have been very crowded and a very hectic situation," he said. "But in the last couple of years we've really seen some changes in Thanksgiving. Things are good. The lines are operating more smoothly. They are going faster. People seem to be more familiar now with the what the security regulations are."
Hogan says early Wednesday morning was the first peak of the day. He's expecting another busy period early Wednesday evening as people leave work and head to the airport for their flights. Hogan said the weather is not causing any major problems so far.
"There are some storms in the midsection of the country as well as in the Northeast. But nothing that looks like it's going to cause any major delays or backups across the country," he said. "So, all in all, I'd say we're having some pretty good weather so far for the Thanksgiving travel."
