Naked intruder killed in Mankato

(AP) - Police shot and killed a naked man who apparently broke into an apartment and threatened the officers with broken glass.

Police said they were called by residents who came home to find a naked man damaging things in their apartment. Neighbors said the residents were college-age women.

The officers who responded late Sunday tried to subdue the man and were injured.

"During the struggle, the officers were attacked by the man wielding broken pieces of glass and he was fired upon and killed," said a press release from the Mankato Department of Public Safety.

The name of the man was not immediately released. The three officers were treated and released from Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.

Hank Devlaeminck said he was playing video games on the third floor of a house across the street when the three officers arrived just before midnight Sunday. Shortly after, he said he heard three shots.

"I turned around and ran downstairs because I have kids in the house," Devlaeminck said. "I wanted to make sure they were safe. Then I went outside and more cops and more cops kept coming. It looked like there were 45 cop cars here at one point."

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was investigating, with help from the city police.
