Borders in downtown Minneapolis to close

(AP) - Downtown Minneapolis is losing another big retailer.

The Borders bookstore in Block E will close Feb. 2.

A spokeswoman for Borders says the store on Hennepin Avenue has been an "underperforming outlet."

Borders has tried to sublease its 24,000 square-foot space for the past year but has been unable to find a tenant.

Borders has been part of Block E since the complex opened in 2002. The bookstore has 42 employees -- and some of them could be transferred to the chain's eight other Twin Cities locations.

Several other downtown Minneapolis retailers have announced plans to leave -- including Williams-Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, Badiner Jewelers, and Nate's Clothing.
