In Minnesota almost 51 percent of people age 18 to 24 in the state's metro areas admitted to binge drinking in a recent survey. Among their rural counterparts that number jumps to 60 percent, according to figures from the 2005 Minnesota Survey of Adult Substance Abuse. What is it that motivates these young people to drink to excess?

Binge drinking happens on virtually every college campus. Minnesota Public Radio producer Charlie Knutson asked students near the University of Minnesota what motivates young people to binge drink.
