It might be spring on the calendar, but the heavy snow across central and southeastern Minnesota shows winter hasn't given up yet. By 7 a.m. Friday, 5 inches of snow had fallen in Montevideo and nearly that in Chanhassen. It was also piling up in Lester Prairie, Red Wing and Shakopee.
The National Weather Service says a winter storm warning remains in effect for an area starting near Morris and going southeast passed Rochester and into Wisconsin.
Visibility in that area is predicted to drop to less than a mile. The weather service is forecasting 6 to 9 inches of heavy wet snow in the area by Friday evening.
Lower snowfall totals are expected both north and southwest of the warning area, with accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in the forecast.
Roads are expected to be treacherous throughout the day. Delays at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport at mid-morning were at 20 minutes and increasing.
