The Minnesota House has approved a new local system for electing the school board in Bloomington. The House passed the bill Tuesday on a vote of 91 to 42.

Under the measure, the Bloomington school district is required to elect four school board members from specific geographic areas. Three other members would be elected by the district at-large.

DFL Representative Ann Lenczewski of Bloomington said the legislation would give school district residents equal representation.

"And this would ensure that across the city of Bloomington folks would have a voice at the school board level, identical to the way the Bloomington city council is constructed," Lenczewski said.

The bill allows the Bloomington school board to enact the election changes by resolution. If the board doesn't act, the issue would go to school district voters in the 2010 election.
