Popular Gunflint lodge burns down

A popular lodge on the upper reaches of the Gunflint Trail has burned.

The main building of the Hungry Jack Lodge was destroyed by fire Wednesday. Several resort cabins were undamaged.

Owner Forest Parson said he and several others were in the building when fire was discovered on the lower level. Parson said he is unsure if he'll rebuild.

"Well initially, of course, we have to, . . . clean up what we have and then just proceed from there. We're not sure what direction we're going to go yet," said Parson.

The lodge on Hungry Jack Lake was evacuated, but undamaged by last year's Ham Lake fire.

This is the third time the lodge building has burned most recently in 1972.

Logs for the structure lost Wednesday were from an older state-owned building disassembled in Grand Marais, Minn.
