Lake Superior dropped a half-inch more than normal during March, and it's expected to rise less than normal in April.

That's the latest from the International Lake Superior Board of Control. It issued its report on Wednesday.

The big lake dropped an inch last month, a month when it usually drops only 0.4 inches.

That's the result of a drier-than-normal winter across much of the Lake Superior basin. For example, Duluth is a foot below normal for snowfall this winter.

Lake Superior now sits 11 inches below its long-term average for the beginning of April but is 6 inches above the level at this time last year.

Those extra inches should make it easier to get recreational boats in and out of the lake this year, but won't give much help to freighters trying to get to shallow ports.
