The cool spring has slowed the annual mosquito hatch across Minnesota, but officials say the insects should appear soon.
Jim Stark, of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, says mosquitoes develop in a matter of days in the middle of the summer. But, he said it can take weeks in cold water.
"We're about a week or two behind in mosquito development, but we are starting to see mosquitoes getting into their final stages in the water. And, we'll probably start seeing some adult mosquitoes emerging here within the next few days," Stark said.
Stark said homeowners can help cut down the number of mosquitoes by emptying bird baths, tires and any other receptacles which collect and hold water. He said even small wet places can be primary breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
