Police charge suspect for alleged rape of U of M student

Minneapolis police have charged a suspect in connection to an alleged rape near the Univ. of Minn. May 4th.

The victim in the incident broke her ankle after jumping out a second-story window to escape her attacker.

Police spokesman Jesse Garcia said DNA evidence led officers to charge 24-year-old Christopher Edwards Karls of Wayzata with rape and kidnapping.

"When he forced his way in the house, he cut himself somehow and left a few drops of blood behind, which they took samples of, had them processed, and checked for DNA and had a positive match for that particular suspect that was arrested," spokesman Garcia said.

Police said Karl's DNA was on file with the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for previous felonies.

Police said the suspect initially demanded money from the victim. He then held a knife to her throat and sexually assaulted her.
