Xcel Energy is installing one of the first 100 percent renewable soy oil transformers in Minnesota. The soy oil is used to help cool the transformer.

Xcel spokeswoman Michelle Swanson says the company is switching from mineral oil to soy oil to help protect the environment.

"The soy-based oil that we're going to be using is biodegradable, no-toxic, and recyclable. And in addition, soy oil can extend the life of a transformer," said Swanson.

Swanson says soy oil is more expensive than mineral oil, but that'll be offset by the transformer's longer life. Xcel plans to install about 4,000 soy oil transformers in Minnesota in the coming year.
