Students at Winona State University will help meet the state's need for election judges this fall.
The Secretary of State's Office estimates the state will need 30,000 election judges. The Winona State project is part of a national effort to increase voter access and turn-out.
WSU political science professor Kara Lindaman said the program will train 100 students as election judges. She said while it's important that people vote, serving as an election judge makes the importance of voting much more real.
"Where this kind of public service, this investment in your local community, serving your local community for an entire day will have much more of a lasting effect," Lindman said.
The National Election Commission expects to need 2 million poll workers this fall, twice the number in 2004. The Commission expects higher voter turnout and problems with new voting equipment.
