For the first time since 2001, a child in Minnesota has contracted measles from someone in the state. The Minnesota Department of Health says a 10-month-old Hennepin County child has the infectious disease.

The case is drawing attention because it's rare for someone to get measles from someone else in the community; most recent cases of measles involve someone who traveled to an area where the disease is more common.

The child had not been vaccinated, because the vaccination is not recommended before 12 months of age.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer talked with Dr. Ruth Lynfield, state epidemiologist at the Minnesota Department of Health.
