Minn. Medical Association approves stem cell resolution

Following some intense debate, members of the Minnesota Medical Association have approved a resolution supporting embryonic stem cell research.
The vote brings the state's largest physicians group in agreement with the American Medical Association, which had already adopted a similar position.
Dr. Lisa Erickson proposed the Minnesota resolution. She says the MMA vote is the equivalent of putting out a huge welcome mat for the nation's stem cell scientists.
"This is gonna help Minnesota attract scientists and researchers to our institutions and we'll get on to the necessary work of curing diseases," said Erickson.
The resolution also encourages support for more federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. Erickson says she's not sure if the MMA's new position will help secure that funding, but she said it doesn't hurt the states prospects.
The Minnesota Medical Association wrapped up its annual meeting Friday in St. Paul .
