Review of NE Minn. taconite expansion to begin
An environmental review is about to begin of the proposed expansion of the Keetac taconite plant in Keewatin.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it has decided which environmental issues to look at.
The DNR says the environmental review will look at several issues, including potential effects on forest, wildlife and water resources.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is involved for potential wetland issues. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is looking at air emissions issues, especially mercury emissions.

U.S. Steel has proposed expanding the taconite pit and restarting an idled production line at the plant. The $300 million project would increase production by 60 percent and add 75 people to the 400-person workforce.
The Environmental Impact Statement could be completed and ready for public comment by late spring of 2009.
