Minn. 'on cusp' of losing House seat

State demographer Tom Gillaspy says Minnesota is "right on the cusp" of losing a congressional seat after the 2010 census.

That's when seats in the U.S. House are reapportioned to reflect population shifts.

Gillaspy says sun belt states including Texas and Arizona will gain seats, while northeastern and Midwestern states including New York, Ohio and Iowa will lose.

Gillaspy says his projections show Minnesota just under the number of residents needed to keep eight seats.

Redistricting will also involve changes in the state's current congressional districts.

Gillaspy says population growth means the suburban 6th and 2nd Districts will have to give up some voters to shrinking districts in Minneapolis, St. Paul and rural parts of the state.
