Bus breakdown snarls rush hour traffic

A Minneapolis city bus broke down tonight during rush hour causing a delay on Interstate 94 that backed up traffic for miles. The bus broke down in the westbound lanes of the Lowry tunnel, spilling oil in the roadway. But the backup extended well past the 5th Street exit.

It took crews about an hour to tow the bus away and clean up the oil.

"It broke down at west I-94 and the tunnel and obviously we had to get the bus towed and additionally the oil leaked in the tunnel and that had to be cleaned up that took about an hour and at the tail end of rush hour that caused a residual backup," said Lt. Mark Peterson of the Minnesota State Patrol.

Traffic is moving again but Peterson says it could take time for the congestion to break up completely.
