The Minnesota Department of
Transportation will hand out the first contracts for road work
funded by federal stimulus dollars this week.


      That means orange cones and detours will start showing up within
seven or eight weeks.


      MnDOT spokesman Kevin Gutknecht (GOOT'-nehkt) says the first
wave of contracts will be let on Friday, with more to come every
couple of weeks through June.


      Minnesota is in line for about nearly $600 million in stimulus
money for roads, bridges and public transit. The list of greater
Minnesota projects is already public, while the Twin Cities lineup
is expected in the coming weeks.


      MnDOT is seeking legislative authorization to spend the stimulus
money by the end of March.
