The city council picked the name "Granite City Crossing" for the bridge that will replace the DeSoto bridge. It was torn down after inspectors found distorted gusset plates in the wake of the 35W bridge collapse. Bob Johnson is president of the St. Cloud city council. He said the council considered several names selected by the public, and DeSoto, received the most votes.

"We looked at the top two choices that were selected out of 10 or so by the public and ended up picking Granite City Crossing," Johnson said. "[It's] representative of this larger community and the granite industry, and certainly crossing referencing going over the bridge."

Johnson said the city council will submit the new name to the state legislature, which will likely name the bridge in the next session.
