Police standoff with armed man in East Bethel ends

A five-hour standoff between police and an armed man who holed up in a wooded area near an East Bethel church ended peacefully Wednesday night.

KSTP-TV reported that police said one shot was fired at its news helicopter around 9 p.m., but it didn't strike the aircraft, which retreated from the area.

The station says the incident started around 6:15 p.m. with a report of a shot fired at a nearby home. The gunman fled into the woods near Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, reportedly with two high-powered rifles.

Authorities evacuated the church, where a service was taking place, as well as nearby homes.

Shortly after 11 p.m., an official with the Anoka County sheriff's department told the station the incident had ended peacefully and that the man had been taken into custody.
