Xcel Energy is investigating the automatic shutdown of one of its nuclear reactors at Prairie Island on Monday afternoon.

The company said no one was hurt, there was no release of radioactive material and there was no threat to the public.

It happened about 1 p.m. Monday following a partial loss of turbine condenser cooling at the plant near Red Wing.

The other reactor at Prairie Island was not affected and is running at full power.

Xcel says it does not expect the shutdown to last long. While it does, the company will follow its policy of either buying power or ramping up production at its other plants.
