Deadline looms for Minn. 'clean diesel' grant apps

The lure of public money for diesel equipment operators to clean up their engines expires Thursday.

That's the deadline for submitting grant applications to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. There's almost $1.6 million up for grabs, in maximum grants of $150,000.

Money is being drawn from federal stimulus funds for Minnesota.

The competitive grants are open to local governments, tribes, colleges, mass transit operators, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Buses, heavy-duty trucks, farm equipment and locomotives are the prime targets.

The money can be used to upgrade engines or make other fixes that will reduce emissions. Public entities can seek grant money to replace older diesel vehicles and equipment with hybrids.
