Gang Strike Force board to discuss temporary unit

Authorities focused on combating gang activity in the Twin Cities area hope to set up a temporary unit this week so their investigations can continue while the Metro Gang Strike Force remains suspended.

The advisory board of the strike force will discuss the temporary unit at its meeting Tuesday. Department of Public Safety spokesman Andy Skoogman says the goal is to have it running Wednesday.

The Metro Gang Strike Force was suspended after a review found it did a poor job of tracking seized and forfeited property. The FBI is also investigating.

Advisory Board chairman and West St. Paul police Chief Bud Shaver says a temporary unit is essential to keep gang-fighting efforts going.

He says a multi-city unit focused on gang issues helps local departments with limited resources.
