State officials with a group of military veterans are opening a time capsule left during the 1934 construction of a Minneapolis Veterans Home.
The state Department of Veterans Affairs holds a ceremony Tuesday to kick off the demolition of building 9 and subsequent construction of a replacement on the Vets' Home campus in south Minneapolis. Residents were moved from that building in 2007 after structural problems were discovered.
The time capsule was found in the cornerstone of building 9. Construction on the building began in 1934 and was completed in 1937.
Construction of the new facility is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2011.
