Man charged with unintentional 2nd-degree murder in beating death

The Ramsey County Attorney's Office charged a 40-year-old man today with unintentional second-degree murder in last month's beating death of a Lauderdale man.

A criminal complaint filed today alleges that William Dee Barnett broke into 46-year-old Todd Bernard's apartment on June 11 and severely beat him before fleeing.

The complaint said Barnett, whose address is unknown, admitted to police that he threw a brick at the victim, beat him and kicked him.

Bernard was taken to a hospital where he never regained consciousness. He died of injuries sustained in the attack on July 4.
