Bond reduced for women accused of killing baby in tent

A judge has reduced bail for the Willmar woman accused of killing a baby and injuring his mother by backing a van over their camping tent in Renville County.

Unconditional bail for Nicolle Prechel was dropped from $500,000 to $100,000 during a court hearing Monday. Conditional bail was reduced from $200,000 to $25,000 for the 31-year-old Prechel. She faces two felony counts of criminal vehicular homicide, among other charges.

Three-month-old Whyatt Sander died and his mother, 21-year-old Sheena Hinshaw, was injured July 5 while camping at a Renville County park. Prechel told authorities that she had hit the gas pedal instead of the brake when backing into the camping site and struck the tent.

Prosecutors argued Prechel was an "extreme flight risk" and asked that the high bond be continued.
