Art Hounds: The Fringe, Kevin Cannon & Paolo Nutini

Share story

Each week Minnesota Public Radio News asks three people from the Minnesota arts scene to be "Art Hounds." Their job is to step outside their own work and hunt down something exciting that's going on in local arts.

Find out how you can be an art hound.

This week:

Jacqueline Ultan is a cellist who plays in several groups in the Twin Cities, including the cello-based quartet, "Jelloslave," and the indie pop band "The Star Folk." Jacqueline also teaches at the MacPhail Center For Music in Minneapolis.

She saw Scottish soul artist Paolo Nutini on public television's Austin City Limits recently and was floored by his musical talent and presence. Paolo Nutini will perform at the Minnesota Zoo on August 3.

Maureen Kane Berg is a Minneapolis playwright who likes to catch at least a handful of shows at the Minnesota Fringe Festival every year. This year, with more than 160 productions at an hour a piece, there's plenty to choose from.

Maureen specializes in musicals, and two fringe musicals this year caught her eye; "33 Dates," and "Tech Support: The Musical." The Fringe runs non-stop from July 30th through August 9th at 22 venues, 20 in Minneapolis and one in St. Paul.

Britt Aamodt is a freelance arts journalist who's writing a book on Minnesota cartoonists for the Minnesota Historical Press. Britt calls Kevin Cannon one of the hottest young artists in the state right now.

Cannon is a cartoonist who's just published his first graphic novel, "Far Arden," through Top Shelf Publications, one of the foremost indie comic publishers in America. "Far Arden" is about a "crusty old sea dog" who goes searching for the mythical island of Far Arden.
