Northwest jet blows 5 tires during landing at MSP
A Northwest Airlines jet blew five tires as it landed at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Sunday, closing a runway for a few hours.
No injuries were reported. There were no passengers on board but 15 employees were inside the plane.
Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Pat Hogan says the plane was arriving in Minnesota to prepare for future flights.
It landed without crashing or going off the runway shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday, but it blocked the runway for the rest of the afternoon. There were no major delays.
It's not clear why the tires blew. Hogan says the pilot reported his brakes were overheating.
Hogan says airplanes have dual wheels like semi trucks that provide stability if tires blow.
The Northwest plane was being operated by Delta Airlines.
