Gas leak closes buildings at Concordia University

A gas leak that led to the evacuation of some Concordia University buildings in St. Paul was stopped after about three hours Tuesday.

University spokeswoman Jill Johnson says people in Concordia's Lutheran Memorial Center, E.M. Pearson Theatre, Buetow Music Center, Library Technology Center, Pearson Commons and the Help Desk corridor were evacuated.

Several roads in the area were also closed Tuesday afternoon, but reopened Tuesday night. However, St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard says Hamline Avenue at Concordia Avenue were to remain closed.

Zaccard said a 6-inch, high-pressure gas line was struck during some digging in the area.

Xcel Energy turned off the gas while the Fire Department was standing by.
