Pedestrian struck and killed by light rail in Minneapolis

A light-rail train traveling about 50 mph has struck and killed a pedestrian in south Minneapolis.

Metro Transit spokesman Bob Gibbons says the train driver made eye contact with the man, who was then hit by the train about 1:35 p.m. Thursday.

Train service in the area was stopped for a time while authorities investigated.

It's the second fatal incident on the light rail system in two weeks. On Aug. 3, witnesses said Abdirahman Hirsi drove a car around a crossing arm and was struck by a train.
