Lawmakers consider future Twin Cities rail projects

Lawmakers who help pick state-backed construction projects will ride the Northstar commuter rail line on Wednesday.

The House Capital Investment Committee is considering future rail projects to build a Twin Cities-centered network.

Members of the panel will take the Northstar line from Big Lake to downtown Minneapolis. The line begins service on Nov. 16, with stops in Elk River, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley.

The panel is looking at proposals to build new rail lines to the southwest, northwest, southeast and north, plus high-speed rail to Chicago. They will also look at transit plans outside the Twin Cities.
