Teacher charged with providing alcohol to students

A Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School teacher has been charged with providing alcohol to students.

Scott Douglas Richards is charged with two counts each of providing alcohol to an underage person and of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. All four charges are misdemeanors. Three teenagers are involved; two are 18 years old while the other is 16.

Superintendent Greg Vandal says the 38-year-old Richards taught eighth grade social studies and has been on paid leave since Aug. 31. The district is conducting its own investigation.

The complaint filed Tuesday also says Richards allegedly smoked cigars with juveniles and bought them tobacco.

He's not under arrest and is due in court Oct. 6.

Richards was not home and could not be reached for comment Thursday.
