Minn. nonprofits look ahead to health care changes

Minnesota nonprofits gather on Thursday to learn how a potential federal health insurance mandate might affect them as employers.

The nonprofit sector employs roughly 10 percent of the state's work force.

Several Democratic proposals for the health care legislation would require employers to provide health coverage or pay fees if their workers don't get coverage or end up getting it from the government.

A 2008 survey by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits found that 87 percent of nonprofits offered health insurance to full-time workers, covering nearly all the employees in the sector.

The council is hosting the forum in St. Paul.
