Minnesota ranked ninth in number of divorced residents

Minnesota had the ninth-lowest percentage of divorced residents in the nation last year, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

About 9.7 percent of Minnesotans who participated in the yearly American Communities Survey reported their current marital status as divorced.

North Dakota reported the lowest numbers, at 8.1 percent. Nevada had the highest, at 14.2 percent.

Other Midwestern states showed similar percentages to Minnesota, with Wisconsin at 10 percent, Illinois at 9.5 percent, Iowa at 10.2 percent, and South Dakota at 10.3 percent.

Minnesota's divorce percentage has inched up slowly over the past several years, at 9.5 percent in 2007, 9.3 percent in 2006, and 9.1 percent in 2005.

The percentage does not include residents who divorced and then remarried.
