New 35W express lane opens today

New Interstate 35W express lanes between downtown Minneapolis and Burnsville are opening to traffic.

Solo drivers who purchase a Minnesota Department of Transportation MnPASS will be able to use lanes that had previously been reserved only for car pools. The lanes will be available starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Car pools with two or more occupants, motorcycles and transit buses will still be able to use the express lanes. Similar lanes are in operation on Interstate 394, and MnDOT says the option has proven to be popular with commuters.

MnPASS tolls average $1 to $4 during rush hours, with a maximum cost of $8. Fees are posted on overhead signs at the entrances. There's also a monthly fee of $1.50 per MnPASS transponder device.
